Pie comes in a multitude of sizes, flavors, and levels of deliciousness, but if you happen to be a mathematician, your favorite variety is probably not the sort that will help you gain five pounds over a weekend. You are more likely for the sort that always forgets an ‘e’ and comes in the shape of 3.1415925 (with many more decimal places coming after it that it would be silly to fill a paper with) – the magical number of circles, cycles, and no sugar at all: Pi. So it was, on March 14th (3-14, see the joke?), the LSSU department of Mathematics and Computer Science declared Pi Day, a day of revelry and math related fun, the likes of which has never before been seen in the frozen north. The first Pi Day was two years ago, and, like this year’s celebration, beginning with a Pi themed poster contest, culminated in the Math Bowl, a tournament in which teams of four from area high schools came to compete for the title of... well, there is a title to be had, surely, though perhaps “Ultimate Math Geek” would not be something they would vie for quite as intensely. Ten teams from four high schools participated in the Bowl, and when the dust settled only one remained – the Wise Guys team from Rudyard High. Winners received certificates and plaques, but all walked away with random snacks and an abundance of Lake State paraphernalia, as is common at school functions. Last year’s Bowl was different, however, and ended in a duel of epic proportions between the Math and Engineering departments, and while the reasons for the change are unknown, it may be because the Crow’s Nest could not structurally support another battle of such terrible destructive entities. Professor Gregory, the person in charge of organizing the event, said she would like to thank the math department and everyone else who participated, without which they never would have been able to host the event.
