On Thursday at noon, the Career Services staff held an informal career exploration workshop. Students were able to discuss their major, what they do and don’t like about it, what they’d like to do and possible pathways to achieve their goals. Several students were able to take the “Strong” assessment that helps match students’ interests and place them in effective fields for their interests and habits.
New layer...

If you feel like you’ve picked a major that’s nothing like what you thought it would be or you’ve discovered something you’d absolutely love to spend your life doing, you’re not alone.

Julia Barlow Sherlock, director of Career Services at Central Michigan University says, “85 percent of the ones who think they know what they want to do end up changing their mind once they are in college…On average, students change their major at least three times during their college career”.

Whatever the case, the Career Services Center can help you develop a constructive path for your college career and help you set yourself up for success after graduation. If you missed the Career Exploration, stop by the career services center. They’ll help you through a series of assessments that may help you determine the best career path for you. The career service center can also help you ace your interview, build your résumé, or assess where you are in college and choose the best option. No matter where you are in your college career, a trip to the career services center can be extremely beneficially.

Many students stick to a major they are very unhappy with because they feel that switching their major is a sign of failure. The only way to fail is to keep doing something you’ll never enjoy.

The Career Services Center holds hours Monday through Friday from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. Call (906)635-2733 to make an appointment. Don’t be afraid to go explore other majors or look at your options within your major. They also have a collection of great summer job postings if you’re still looking for a job or internship for this summer.
