THIS IS A JOKE. It is part of our April Fools Day edition. Earlier this week, the U.S. Coast Guard along with U.S. Border Patrol and Sault Ste. Marie were called to Ashmun Park because of several suspicious people that had been seen in the area. About 10 individuals were seen dressed in combat gear and camouflage clothing, armed with rifles and machineguns, running into the woods directly under the International Bridge. Several passing motorists called 911, one of whom said “I saw so many folks with guns, and since 9/11/01, I have always been watching for terrorists planning on bombing either the Locks or the Bridge. So when I saw these folks running into the woods, I naturally called 911.” This caused quite a stir in the law enforcement community, and over 20 officers ran to the scene. They surrounded the woods where the individuals had been seen to enter, with the Coast Guard watching from the water. After a short standoff, the suspects surrendered and walked out of the woods with their hands raised. Although no names were released as of press time, it is rumored that at least several of the suspects are LSSU students. Research has shown that the several LSSU students, part of an airsoft team, had checked their airsoft guns out from Public Safety, and had mentioned that they were going to be playing in the vicinity of Ashmun Park. If they were the individuals who caused the ruckus, the incident is sure to be taken up by the University, and or the court. The University chose not to respond to this reporters questions, in the past they have taken a very dim view of students causing such a ruckus with law enforcement, and have shut clubs down for less serious offenses. However, the individuals did nothing criminal, since the airsoft guns they were playing with are not technically considered firearms. As such, there have been no arrests made, and none are likely to occur. The club has promised to be more careful where they play in the future, and to let Sault Police know in advance where they will be so there are no more confusions of this sort.
