THIS IS A JOKE. It is part of our April Fools Day edition. The National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration announced today that the Eastern U.P., and the Soo in particular, can expect a massive snow storm this Friday with estimates of snowfall between 15 and 20 inches. Although a few days late, it seems as though Nature is playing a April Fool’s Day joke on us. NOAA expects that this snow storm will last at least 12 hours, which has local snow removal crews gearing up for a hard day. According to one of the plow drivers at LSSU, “That much snow in such a short period of time will make it extremely difficult to plow- it will take many, many hours.” The Sault Ste. Marie crews are wondering if there will be enough road salt “WE normally don’t get this much snow so late in the season. If the temperatures go up much in the following days, the ice will be terrible, and we just don’t have enough salt for all of the roads.” Another major concern is with all of the shipping going through the Soo Locks this time of the year. The lock authorities are making plans on how to handle all the ships in the expected poor visibility conditions, and even considering temporarily closing the locks. Students are encouraged by the thought of another snow day, bringing a day of respite from the daily grind of school life. They are cautioned however, to be careful going out in such a storm, and not to drive anywhere. Driving in such conditions is extremely dangerous, and could easily result in major accidents. All students are urged to take precautions, and to plan on staying home all day Friday. From ships to students, life will likely be at a stand still this Friday if the expected storm descends on the Soo. |
