For those of you who don’t know who I am, I am the current operational manager of Student Government. From what I have heard at meetings and around the campus regarding the Activities Board overspending, I see that some people are looking at this problem in the wrong order. Michelle Thalacker has publicly said that she has made a mistake and by doing so has become the main focus of what is going on.

This in my eyes has turned almost into a Loony Tunes cartoon in some ways. In the cartoons Daffy Duck walks into a clearing and says something like: “Why, everybody knows it’s really duck hunting season.” At that point all the hunters pop up and give him both barrels. Like Daffy, Michelle stepped up and said, in our situation, what Daffy said and she is now surrounded by everyone looking at her like she did it all. While like Bugs Bunny, the others at fault are safely off to the side out of the line of fire.

My fellow students this is not the time to assign blame and hand out punishment. This is the time to find a solution to handling the debt that has occurred and what if any of the items that or are still contributing to it can be scaled down or cancelled so that the students body as a group are not punished for other mistakes. After that is done then we can look into who is at fault and what will happen to them at that time. For those currently who are looking at who is at fault I leave you with this:

Who designed the way our accounts are kept in the computer?

Who setup Banner to not keep track of our accounts?

And this is not pointed at any member directly on our Activities Board but how could the Activities Board have more events than last year without a decent budget increase and not question how much money they have left?

Please think about these questions before just blaming one person for what has happened.
