This coming week is very important to Lake State’s extra-curricular setting. What is commonly referred to as “Greek Week” is finally here. It’s a time for students to get acquainted with some outstanding student leaders and take a bigger role in not only their campus, but their community. Sororities and Fraternities aim to bring up successful students and citizens as well as provide a feeling of brotherhood (as the name “fraternity” comes from the Greek word “frater” meaning brother – Sorority of course comes from the word meaning sister). They often pair up with a certain cause or Greek week provides students with even a slight interest in Greek sororities or fraternities plenty of opportunities to find out more and get involved. Even if you decide that a fraternity or sorority is not for you, it’s a great week to meet people and have some fun. Theta XiTheta Xi is one of the oldest fraternities in the nation and the oldest at Lake State. Members of this fraternity seek to provide a “college home environment” and its mission statement is “to create successful college graduates through our academic programs and leadership opportunities”. One of the trademarks of Theta Xi is its Spring Break trip to Florida for Habit for Humanity. Theta Xi will be having two main events this fall: the Alpha Party that promotes alcohol awareness. The party has a root beer keg, free root beer floats, root beer ping-pong, and a guest speaker. The second event is Area 51 paintball in Gaylord. Theta Xi will be involved in several activities during Greek Week. They will be at the following events to answer questions and meet prospective brothers: Bowling at Dundee, 9/21/08 at 10 pm; Alpha Party at Peacock Cove, 9/23/08 at 6 pm; Dodge ball at the SAC, 9/25/08 at 8pm; Grill Out with Alpha Kappa Chi at Sherman Park, 9/27/08 at 3 pm; Poker at Brady, 9/29/08 at 9 pm; Euchre at Brady, 10/1/08 at 9 pm; Volleyball with Sigma Lambda Sigma at the SAC, 10/02/08 at 8 pm; and Paintball at Area 51, 9/4/08 at 8am. Alpha Theta OmegaAlpha Theta Omega is celebrating its twelfth anniversary this year. They are a social sorority with seven active members and one active alumni. Their philanthropy is Breast Cancer Awareness and most fundraisers are linked to the Susan G. Koman fund. They host many social events throughout the year including their annual Pink Night. Last year they sponsored a pancake breakfast in which all the proceeds went to the Susan G Koman fund and a Walk for Pink. Alpha Theta Omega stresses that they are a “fun” sorority but they work as hard as they play. Their main goal is for all members to thrive both academically and socially. They push for academic and social excellence both within the sorority and without and help each other with every aspect of achieving success. Delta Sigma PhiDelta Sigma Phi is a national social fraternity that has members across the United States. Their main goal is to help young men learn the meaning and benefits of brotherhood so that they have a strong network along with the social and professional prowess to gain the types of jobs and careers they want further down the road. They work closely with the Red Cross and put on several events and fundraisers throughout the year. Alpha Phi OmegaAlpha Phi Omega is a co-ed (male and female) service fraternity. Their main focuses are to develop leadership skills, promote friendships and provide service to humanity. Alpha Phi Omega was started in 1925 as a scouting fraternity and then expanded to except all men and eventually women as well. Alpha Phi Omega is a very large fraternity, boasting national membership of about 17,000. Founded on the Lake State campus three years ago, Alpha Phi Omega has members from a variety of programs and majors. Currently there are roughly 14 members in the fraternity. Alpha Phi Omega conducts many service projects throughout the year including helping with the local Boys and Girls Club, fundraising for the Sault Heating Fund, sending care packages to troops overseas, and sponsoring the Bridge Walk. Alpha Kappa ChiAlpha Kappa Chi was the first sorority on campus, established in 1978. The letters (A K X) symbolize Love, Beauty and Grace, which are strongly tied to the sorority. Alpha Kappa Chi is a social sorority, so all are welcome, regardless of major. Alpha Kappa Chi focuses on four main philanthropies: American Diabetes Association, Epilepsy Research, Cystic Fibrosis, and the Diane Peppler Shelter. One fundraiser that the sorority is famous is for is their 48-hour teeter-totter-a-thon. Something that makes Alpha Kappa Chi so unique is that they accept anyone, making for an interesting group of people that really benefit from one another and complete the circle of sisterhood. Tau Kappa Epsilon, Lambda Sigma Beta, and Sigma Lambda Sigma are other greek organizations on campus that could not be contacted for information. If they would like to have information about themselves in the Compass, they should contact us at (906) 635-2551 or at This e-mail address is being protected from spam bots, you need JavaScript enabled to view it
