It’s so easy to make fun of the institution you attend. Sometimes complaining is just so much easier than having a positive attitude and I’m sure all of us have heard people bash Lake State. However, there are MANY reasons to be proud that you’re a Laker! There’s a reason you’re here. Something made you choose Lake Superior State University over all the other colleges you and/or your parents looked at. It’s important to remember those reasons and cherish your school. We can all be better people and make a big difference on and off campus just by having pride in who and what we are. After all, there’s so much to be prideful of here at Lake State. Here are some top reasons to be proud of being a Laker:

Number five: You’re developing personal ties. At Lake State you can form bonds that just aren’t available at any other university, and especially not at any other public university. A small campus brings us close together. Mallory Zaluki says, “There are a precious few of us Lakers. We’re few and far-in-between! When I’m downstate and I see a vehicle with Lake State decals, I want to honk and wave; I feel like I’m part of a tight-knit family.” Students are able to become very close to faculty and therefore learn more than they would, feel more secure than they would, and are better prepared than students coming from other universities. Be proud because you have an awesome chance to work closely with brilliant minds (both faculty and students)! Take pride in that you have the best support system around: other Lakers! No matter what, there’s always someone here for you. You belong at Lake State.

Number four: Lake State is a great place to learn. We offer many programs that aren’t available elsewhere or aren’t nearly as well developed. In addition, we offer a lot of field training. Professors and advisers are all very accessible and helpful; they’ll work with you to find the right program for you or help you develop a slightly different program that fits you perfectly. A degree from Lake State says all sorts of good things about you because our programs are strong! Be proud of what you’re accomplishing! Lake State provides you with a hopeful future and the ability to study exactly what you love.

Number three: Hockey. We have approximately 2,500 full time students. University of Michigan has nearly ten times as many. We trash them in Division One Hockey. Enough Said.

Number two:  Lake State offers many great resources. We’re here to help you succeed. College is the time for you to shine and become the very best person possible. There are so many resources available on campus to help you fulfill your potential. In addition to The Learning Center, Career Services, Counseling Services, and accessible professors, we have each other. Every Laker is part of something bigger, and we’re all here to help each other.

Number one: At Lake State, you matter! On large campuses it’s very easy to get lost and become a number or a face lost in the crowd. Here at Lake State, you’re an individual and you can be something great. It’s so easy to get involved here that you can join or create almost any club you’d like and quickly become someone important to the way an organization functions.

There are many reasons to love Lake State. Each person has reasons for coming here. In remembering those we find a sense of unity. When Lake State is mentioned down state, people seem to smile. We’re a small school but we leave an amazing impression. You’re securing your future by being part of something great and making the most of yourself. That’s something to be proud of.
