One of Epic’s latest talents, Lenka, has her debut album dropping on the 23rd. The single was released on iTunes sometime last week and the album has already made it into iTunes top ten albums. iTunes also featured “The Show,” the albums leading single as “Single of the Week” last week. VH1 has proclaimed Lenka as a “You Oughta Know” artist. “You Oughta Know” airs early in the morning, before most of you reading this get up, and has been a great music barometer for up and coming artists. Oblivious to all the hype I walked into work at WLSO on Monday, and popped in her album that had just come in the mail. Something set this album apart from most of the other ones I have to listen to. This one was good. The first think that came to mind was Ani DiFranco, The Smashing Pumpkins, and Colbie Caillat. As eccentric as Ani DiFranco, as edgy as The Smashing Pumpkins, and as mellow as Caillat. I did some research and realized that I was not the only one who felt this way. She is not a stranger to performing. Lenka got her roots in music at a young age from her father, who played trumpet. She was performing with her father on stage as early as age six. She grew up in Sydney, and started a band there called “Decoder Ring.” According to her website, the band did well. Lenka opens the album with “Wrote Me Out,” a tune about romance gone south (no real surprise there on a new-age album). The song was co-written with AFI’s Hunter Burgan. My favorite song off of the album is “The Show.” Relating to life as just a show, and sometimes not a show I would want to watch, and how we can become ‘caught in the middle.’ The official video is available on www.youtube.com search Lenka. The video actually reminds me of the movie Juno. Lenka has some large shows on the horizon, “Late Night with Conan O’Brian,” this week and “The Tonight Show with Jay Leno” on October 16th. Also look for her in Blender, Spin, and on VH1.com’s “My Play List.” Remember to keep WLSO alive! We are YOUR radio station. Add as favourites (0)
