Recently there has been talk going around about Detroit’s former Mayor Kwame Kilpatrick on campus. Some of it is controversial but most of it comes right down to the nitty gritty grime of politics; Sex, Misconduct, and Lying.

On September 16th, Mayor Kwame Kilpatrick pleaded guilty to two charges of felony for lying under oath and pleaded no contest to the charge of assault against a police officer. So why is Mayor Kilpatrick being charged with all of the above? It all starts back in 2002 when Kilpatrick decided to throw a party at his mansion which included strippers. Mrs. Carlita Kilpatrick, the mayor’s wife, walked in on the party and proceeded to assault one of the strippers. Later that same night the stripper, Tamara Greene, was shot to death in her boyfriend’s vehicle. During the police investigation, Kwame fired the investigating officer, whom many believe was getting too close to the truth for Kilpatrick’s liking. The former mayor denies ever firing the officer.

Around the same time, Mayor Kilpatrick was allegedly having an affair with Christine Beatty and proceeded to communicate to Beatty by text-messaging which was provided by the city. When appointed by the court, Skytel, the city’s provider, revealed text messages sent between the mayor and Beatty which were of sexual nature and were also related to the Manoogian Mansion Party and the officer being fired.

Kilpatrick also proceeded to misuse funds by spending them on vehicle leases for the family and by taking his family to a spa-resort in California. He also spent city funding on fine dining, expensive wines, and gifts for Christine Beatty.

Also, Kilpatrick  assaulted a police officer who tried to issue a subpoena to an associate of Kilpatrick’s, and assaulted a different police officer by striking him while shoving the first police officer into yet another officer who was present at the same time.

According to statements made by Kilpatrick during a court hearing, he has lied while under oath multiple times. In addition, Kilpatrick has been known to use the “racial card” in defense of his actions, stating that the media had “no facts, no research, no nothing [the media] can use to launch a hate-driven bigoted assault on [Kwame and his family]” during his 2008 State of the City address.

Kilpatrick has also proceeded to invoke his 5th Amendment right 82 times against self-criminalization. His punishment is a forced resignation from office, four months in Wayne Country Jail, loss of pension, inability to run for any office for five years, pay a restitution of 1-million dollars to the citizens of Detroit, and surrender his law license. His sentencing will take effect October 28th, 2008.

Also as of 6:00pm on September 16th, Kilpatrick’s sign on the Detroit Zoo’s water tower was removed and replaced by a new sign; all thanks to an anonymous donor. According to Detroit Zoo’s Communication Director Patricia Janeway, the zoo was not looking for anyone to donate and was not expecting the $20-30 thousand dollar donation that was given.

Mayor Kwame Kilpatrick will be replaced by Detroit City Council President Kenneth Cockrel, Jr.
