There may be lots of “bugs” (like the flu) going around, but one that you really should try to catch is the “learning bug”. The best place to catch it? The Learning Center, located in the basement of the Kenneth J. Shouldice Library. During the week of October 13-17, the Learning Center celebrated “Tutoring Week”. This event was a week-long event that’s purpose was to recognize and celebrate the tutors, SI leaders, Writing Center coaches, Math Center leaders, student managers, and receptionists. These individuals work very hard to help students achieve the best they can academically, which you may know if you have ever utilized the Learning Center. Various activities occurred all week. Every day, a random person, the “nth” that signed in at the learning center won a prize; the number changed daily. Throughout the week, you could vote for your favorite “helper” (i.e. tutor, SI leader, etc) or send them a thank you. You could participate in the “50 Word Fiction” contest, a writing competition in which you were challenged to tell a story using only fifty words! This competition was open to members of the community as well. Among the community members, first place was awarded to Dr. Matt Carroll for his story entitled “Always Analyzing” about a French malfunctioning guillotine, and second place awarded to Laurie Deneve-Ewing for her poem entitled “Life’s Tears”. Lake State students awarded prizes were Kendall Rayburn, first place, for his story titled “Exuberate”, Sam Smith, second place, for a story entitled “The Old Man”, and third place to Sarah Becks, for her story, “Invisible Barrier”. Congratulations to the winners. Also, each day offered special treats to enjoy while studying and using their facility. On Monday, students could help themselves to donuts and cider. Tuesday, you could make yourself a delicious, all-American favorite PB&J. Wednesday you could “have your cake and eat it too”; Thursday you could crunch into a crispy autumn apple. Finally, to end the week with a bang, on Friday, the Learning Center hosted an Open House and celebration. Invitation was open to everyone, and you could enjoy food, live music, and lots of fun. If all of this isn’t enough to get you pumped up to learn and visit the Learning Center, I’m not sure what could. So, if you haven’t already, check it out. If you need help with math, writing a paper, want a quiet place where you can study and eat at the same time, or need help with any subject, stop in. You’ll always find what you’re looking for, and will never be ridiculed. No “stupid” student goes to the Learning Center. Add as favourites (0)
