I have no confidence in Eric Ciarkowski’s ability to serve as Student Government President next year. I severely question his level of commitment and competency; and the fact that he’s not here tonight, the last meeting before the gavel is turned over to him, only reinforces my concerns. Mr. Ciarkowski may be the next most experienced member of this body, but his experience and his ability go not together. In his two years on Student Government, he’s not once demonstrated a leader’s attitude: an attitude of problem-solving and follow-through. In fact, he racked up enough unexcused absences to officially get him impeached as Representative this year. At first I hoped that maybe he’d only be an ineffective president, but upon further reflection I now realize that his presidency will be a detriment to the integrity, legitimacy, and autonomy of the position. The only benefit I see to Eric being president is that he will no longer be able to vote on Student Government business, but unfortunately that benefit does not outweigh the cost. I see two scenarios for next year. One, Eric will realize he’s in over his head and resign before the end of the first semester. Two, he will drop the ball and someone will eventually be forced to impeach him. Either way, the responsibility falls on the rest of the members of Student Government to pick up the pieces. They’ve done amazing things this year, and it’s been a pleasure watching their leadership skills develop and their confidence grow. Mr. Ciarkowski’s winning the election has put them in a very difficult place for next year, and they should prepare themselves for the bumpy road ahead. Finally, I have one challenge for Mr. Ciarkowski: PLEASE, PROVE ME WRONG!!! Sincerely, Amanda Burmeister Secretary of Political Action and University Development Student Government Add as favourites (0)
