Mr. Ciarkowski Responds PDF Print E-mail

It is truly a sad day to see those I have trusted and respected over the last two years fall into the gaps and crevasses of cynicism.  In my two years as a representative, my first under a committee lead by Ms. Burmeister herself, I have never seen something so publicly unethical as what has been written about myself. What solid evidence claims me as detriment to the integrity, legitimacy, and autonomy of the position of Student Government President? Have I spent my time as a student of this University aimlessly, leaving destruction in my path? No, I have explored the frontiers of the other student organizations, come to know more of the faculty, and discussed at length the needed changes facing the students next year.

This year alone I have proven myself in responsibility, accountability, and leadership. At the end of last semester I was elected as Vice President of Theta Xi. In that position I restructured their By-Laws and successfully organized and maintained a newly established committee system not seen in years. In result of my efforts Theta Xi has decided to elect me, as their new Chapter President hoping my work ethic and communication skills will strengthen their fraternity.

Both this year and last year I have attended conferences where leadership is essential. Last year I was able to attend one Association of Michigan University meeting, a gathering of all of Michigan’s public University’s Student Governments. I have displayed my leadership capability at two Model United Nations conventions and have completed Theta Xi’s annual Rising Stars Leadership Academy.

To claim I lack the problem solving and follow through skills of a leader, with the only supporting fact being a few unexcused absences, is an absurd claim. It is true that I have three unexcused absences this year, the most recent of these was due to a time conflict with an on campus event that I was responsible for. Is the fate of Student Government dependant on me neglecting my obligations? By the time you are reading this, my third absence might have already been voted as excused last Wednesday by Student Government itself. If it is Ms. Burnmeister’s intent to impeach every Student Government member who has three or more unexcused absences this year, then be my guest. She might come to find that Student Government might come dangerously close to being an inactive body.

So I leave it to you, the Student Body, to decide again my ability to be Student Government President. This time no vote is required.

Respectfully,

Eric Ciarkowski
President of Student Government
