The Laker women are off to an amazing start for the 2008-2009 season. The season started off in Orlando Florida at Disney World for the 12th annual Disney Tip-Off East Coast Classic. The Lakers won all three games verses Bentley, Columbus State and Alaska-Anchorage. The win against Alaska was a tough one as they were ranked fifth in the Division II Bulletin Pre-Season National Poll. Each of the Lakers games during the tournament were tough. The Lakers came back from early deficits in each game. The tournament win was big for the Lakers as they were not the favorites going in. This weekend, the Lakers hosted their own tournament, the Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference vs. the Great Lakes Valley Conference in the Bud Cooper Gymnasium. The Lakers were looking to improve on last year’s showing in the tournament, when they went 1-1. In the 06-07 tournament, the Lakers were 0-2. The Lakers took on the Lewis University Flyers on Saturday and Wisconsin-Parkside Rangers on Sunday. Saturday’s game was a blowout as the Lakers beat the Flyers 74-54. Many of the Laker players had great games. Alyssa VanderWal scored 13 and had 11 rebounds to complete yet another double-double for Lakers, and Jackie Armstrong added 16 points. Emily Joseph had 19 points as the Lakers top scorer. The Lakers came out of the gate strong, putting the pressure on the Flyers early. The Lakers headed to half time with a 31-21 lead and a lot of confidence in their team. They came out in the second half just as strong. According to the Lakers’ website, they shot an amazing 94.1 percent from the free throw line during Saturday’s game.. Freshman Cassy Schemberger tallied her first ever collegiate points as she knocked down two free throws. With Sunday’s game against Wisconsin-Parkside came another great showing for the Lakers. The Lakers controlled the entire game after coming back from behind in the first few minutes of the game. Once they had the lead, the Lakers never looked back. They entered half time with a 38-26 lead over the Rangers. During the second half, the Lakers never let up. At one point, according to the Laker website, the Lakers tallied a 28 point lead. Ronlea Peterson tallied the most points for the Lakers with 18. Emily Joseph added another 15 points Sunday. Armstrong played to another double-double for the season. Schemberger, a Wisconsin native, was thrilled by the win over her home state school. “It was really exciting. I played against a lot of those girls in AAU and in high school sports, and it’s always fun to beat your rivals.” Schemberger also had a lot of positive things to say about her team; “I think the team is the perfect mixture. We have good leaders, and all the girls are smart players who are willing to help you fix anything you do wrong.” Schemberger has high hopes for the rest of the season. “It’s so exciting to be 5-0. We have really seen our potential. After our first five games, we can see that we can compete. The rest of the GLIAC teams better watch out this season.” The Lakers, now 5-0, are looking forward to the rest of the season. They take on Marygrove on November 23rd in the Bud Cooper Gymnasium at one o’clock. Add as favourites (0)
