SAULT SAINTE MARIE, MI. On Monday, September 29, a student who wishes to remain anonymous discovered private records of forty-five students on the public file-sharing server of Lake Superior State University.

The information appears to have been left on the server by an employee in the Admissions Office. The employee who created the file was unavailable for comment when contacted by The Compass.

“I don’t think that there is a possible way they could have screwed up more”  said LSSU student Kenneth Casperson. “They would probably have to try to be more irresponsible with students’ data.”

The compromised information was posted in the form of two Excel spreadsheets to the public “O Drive”  and was accessible to faculty and departmental computers. Names, phone numbers, birthdates, addresses, student IDs, ACT scores, high school GPAs, Social Security Numbers and other private information were exposed on the public drive for approximately two years before being reported to The Compass.

In response to inquiries from The Compass, Wallace Chase of the the LSSU Information Technology Department took immediate action to remove the private information from the publicly accessible network drive. According to LSSU, the forty-five students whose information was compromised have been informed.

In place of the spreadsheets of private information, there is a folder called “Do not save any data with SSN on the O Drive.”
