When a student new to Lake State’s campus first hears the term Lakerpalooza, they may wonder what Lakerpalooza is, and what exactly goes on there. They are soon to find out that it is an annual event where local businesses and vendors around Sault Sainte Marie and the Eastern Upper Peninsula, along with local organizations and campus organizations, get together to show students what is available to them throughout their years at LSSU. Organizations that from the community that attended this event include area churches, places such as Guido’s Pizza, which offer specials to LSSU students, Cellular One, and various salons. Campus organizations at Lakerpalooza would include WLSO Lake State’s student run radio station, clubs on campus, the sorority and fraternity groups, and the student organized newspaper The Compass. Students not only came to gain knowledge of what is available to them; but they also had chances to win drawings, get a free one minute caricature by artist Adam Pete, play games, climb a rock wall, receive coupons and free t-shirts, and everybody’s favorite, free food! This year’s Lakerpolooza held on September 4, 2007 marked the fifth year that this event has been put on at Lake State. Lakerpolooza has always taken place on Brady Lawn but due to the rainy weather conditions it had to be moved to the Student Activities Center in the Norris Center. The change in location didn’t stop students, parents and members of the community from coming in and seeing what Lake States and Sault Sainte Marie has to offer them. When asked whether or not last years Lakerpalooza was more of a success because it was held outside Sophomore Dan Comps replied “It was better last year due to the fact it was outside, making it easier for everyone to move around.” He also went on to add “It was still fun though because of the free stuff!” This event, held every year, is a great way for the freshmen and everyone else on campus to get a feel for what is around them here at Lake State. It is a great way for students to find clubs and organizations that might be of interest to them or it may be a chance for them to find a job somewhere in the community. Lakerpalooza is an important event that will be put on for its students for many years to come. Add as favourites (0)
