So here we all are again at good old LSSU, and most of us have our first week of classes completed, and are gearing up for another year of learning, fun and the general hoopla of our winter routine.   Some of my readers, however, will have picked up their very first issue of the Compass newspaper, and for those of you to whom we are new, a very hearty welcome.   This article is intended to be a survival guide to LSSU; especially intended for all the freshmen who are new at the whole college thing, and are wondering how to simply get by throughout all the insanity.  To you I can only say this, don’t worry, it will only get worse.

First things first, the food issue, because food is one of life little necessities.   The most obvious place to eat is, of course, the Quarterdeck, which features the general 3 meals a day with your main courses, a salad bar and essentially something for everyone if your tastes aren’t extremely sophisticated or picky.

Also available is the Galley, in the lower level of the Cistler Center, which specializes in grill cooked food such as hamburgers, popcorn chicken, grilled chicken sandwiches, fries, shakes and other fun things.   The store which is attached has milk, salads, chips and other convenience store essentials in case you need them.

Also available on a regular basis is the Café La Cart in Crawford Hall, which is an excellent stop for the early morning coffee run in case you have an 8:00 class in which you need a quick caffeine fix, or a bagel.

If your early morning class is in the library, there is also the Cappuccino Corner which has, in my opinion, some of the best coffee and hot chocolate on campus.   In the afternoons, you can get excellent wraps and other lunch items and it is one of the few places on campus you can find Dr. Pepper in case you’re interested.

If you are interested in something to eat that is not on campus, there is a McDonalds, just down Easterday Ave. within easy walking distance from campus, in the direction of the Interstate.   In the opposite direction down Easterday, is the Soo Supervalue; which should take care of all of your grocery needs, if you don’t have a means of transportation to Glens a few miles away.

Finally one of the Sault’s best kept secrets in the grocery business is the Sault Co-op, which is located near the hospital downtown.   While it is a bit a walk, it is very much worth it because it offers some of the best subs in the area at a very reasonable price.

Well, that is it for me this week on the LSSU survival tips, if you need anything else feel free to ask me or any other upper classman, and we will try to show you all the tricks for surviving this year.
