Those of you who were out and about this past Saturday, may have seen a group of very dirty students walking about the campus. Don’t worry; they weren’t covered in dirt for no reason. Saturday the 8th at 1:00 p.m was the much awaited day of Oozeball, one of many Laker Week events. Oozeball, for those who don’t know, is a volleyball tournament held in mud. Teams of six where asked to register and attend, while those with no team where thrown in with a group the day of. It was a double elimination tournament with the losers of the first games competing in a loser bracket. The matches where played rally style with a cap at 15. The court, which was sprayed down with assistance from the local fire department, was located behind the Norris center at Cooper Field. As the matches started, people were not only diving into the mess, but some where being thrown in for lack of participation. Many slipped past the ball and most just sunk into the muck as they awaited the next serve. “When I first heard about oozeball I didn’t think people would actually be in that much mud, it amazed me how much people really got into it,” said Liz, a freshman who was an onlooker for the first time, There where also many incidents of colliding and tripping over one another, but the games preceded. After multiple hours of flinging themselves into the mess, and sitting in not quite the warmest weather, the winners where presented with game towels labeled “Oozeball.” This team of six was also granted bragging rights until next years down and dirty game. Oozeball was sponsored by SAILS (Student Alumni Involved for Lake State). You can also look forward to events sponsored by SAILS in the future such as Great Lake State Week, Welcome and Exam Kits, Holiday Lighting Ceremony, Bud & Mary Mansfield Parents Award and Tuition Raffle. There will also be another Oozeball game next year for all of those who want a second chance. Add as favourites (0)
