If this is your first issue of the Compass, welcome. If you’re a long time reader, thanks for sticking with us.

Our main goal at the Compass this year is to make the paper more relevant to you, our readers. To that end, there are a couple of things we’re going to work on this year.

In the past, the Compass has made a point of not writing about upcoming events. This was a reasonable decision at the time, but we feel that it’s time for a change. There are so many events calendars scattered about that it’s sometimes hard to tell what’s going on. The Compass is perfectly placed to cut through the clutter and provide a definitive “here’s what’s coming up” to everyone associated with the University.

We’re going to be working more closely with the other Student Branches to try and stay up to date with what they have going on, but we need help from you, the reader, as well. We can’t be everywhere, and certainly aren’t equipped to know everything. If you know about an upcoming event that you want in the calendar, let us know and we’ll help you spread the word. We can also help you place classified ads to, say, wish your friend a happy birthday.

The Compass has been rather light on student-generated content in the past. Last year, we had our first entirely U-Wire-free year in recent memory, meaning that we only ran material generated right here at Lake State. This year we’re looking to go even further by inviting you, the reader, to submit content for print. Is your club doing something interesting? Write us an article and tell us about it. Something going on that’s getting on your nerves? Send in a Letter to the Editor and get your voice heard. We’re also looking for cartoonists interested in entertaining their peers and seeing their name in print.

While we’re on the topic, I’d like to say a word or two about inserts and letters to the editor. Any inserts run in the Compass are paid advertisements. We don’t create the inserts; we just make sure they don’t violate our standards before they go into the paper. Same goes for letters to the editor. We don’t produce them, we don’t endorse them, we don’t even check their grammar; we just make sure they meet our standards and put them in the paper. If you want to share an opposing view, you’re welcome to write a letter or pay for an insert.

Finally, we’re going to be enforcing rather stricter quality control on the articles we write. Poorly written articles are uninformative at best, and can be downright vexing at worst. When members of the Computer Science faculty approach you about grammatical errors, you know you have problems, and it’s time we did something about it.

So, there you have it. We’re here for you, the reader, and will be working hard to serve you better than ever. If you have any comments, questions, concerns, or whatever, please drop me a line at This e-mail address is being protected from spam bots, you need JavaScript enabled to view it I look forward to hearing from you.
