Welcome, freshmen, to Lake Superior State! And welcome back to all returning students! It’s great to have you here for fall semester, 2007. The faculty and staff join me in thanking you for choosing LSSU and we look forward to assisting you in reaching your personal, academic and career goals. Here are some changes on campus for this year: • Several new faculty have joined the University. They are here because of their commitment to your education. Please find out who the new faculty are and welcome them to Lake Superior State! • Always check the LSSU web pages for updates and information. Laker Access in My LSSU is a great source of information on financial aid, registration and institutional events. Many of the University’s web pages have been updated or improved. We continue to upgrade many more, so please use the LSSU sites and stay up to date on events. • There are several events planned for fall semester in the Arts Center, including Second City Comedy on September 14-15; New York Voices on September 22; Superior Festival October 10-14, St. Olaf’s Concert Band on October 17; acapela group Elmo Thumm on October 19; and a Scottish folk band, Back of the Moon, on November 3. Further announcements will be forthcoming concerning cultural diversity presentations as well as a holiday event in December. A few additional thoughts as we begin the 2007-08 academic year: • Keep up with your academic work. A college education is very important to your future. Resist the temptation to put off studying or to miss classes. Get off to a good start and study daily. If you are a freshman, this is particularly important because a good academic start is crucial to future success. Apply yourself. You will not regret it. • There are many clubs, activities and organizations on campus. Get involved. Meet new people, learn, and have fun. Many activities will help you academically and socially. • Enjoy Laker Athletics! Take pride in the Lakers and wear the blue and gold! Support the students who represent LSSU in athletics. This fall, Laker men will compete in cross country, hockey, and basketball. Laker women will take part in cross country, tennis, volleyball, and basketball. • Please remember that your educational experience provides an important opportunity to learn about and to appreciate the contributions and values of people from different cultural backgrounds. This opportunity is truly an integral and essential part of a quality education. People of all backgrounds are very welcome at LSSU. I expect every member of this community to help ensure an environment that values individual and group differences and respects the dignity, rights, and perspectives of others. • If you have personal or academic difficulties, please let us help. Academic advisors, a learning center, and personal counselors are available. The Health Center is ready to assist you with medical concerns. Your education is important and we have expert staff here to assist you with life’s various challenges. Addressing problems is an important part of being successful in college and in life. Learn to deal with problems as they confront you. Make use of the resources that are here for you. Access the LSSU web pages or ask for assistance. This is my final semester at Lake Superior State University. I am retiring soon and a new president will join the University in October. LSSU is a great place and a quality university. If you apply yourself and get involved in activities here, you will receive a very fulfilling educational experience. It has been my pleasure to serve and work with the students, faculty and staff of Lake Superior State University and I wish all of you all the best in 2007-08 and beyond. Go Lakers!
