Along with September 1st being the move in day for freshmen, it was also the first day of a fun “Laker Week.” After all of the freshmen moved in to their new dorms, they were encouraged to go and socialize. What better way to meet the people that you are going to live with for the next year than to have a campus barbeque, and later a movie on the lawn? “I thought that it was a good opportunity to meet people,” said freshmen Ryan Grove. The next day, Laker Week continued at noon with the Playfair, where the main objective was to meet as many people as possible in an hour. Monday featured a fun day at Sherman Park, and for the adventurous, the annual Mackinac bridge walk. Tuesday was a packed day, with four events to attend. First, required for freshman, an academic orientation; later, “Lakerplooza” featured a lot of cool things for students to check out. Along with the free food and gifts, students could gather information on the various clubs and organizations they could become involved with. Later the much anticipated ESPN tailgate party commenced. Wednesday brought a welcome treat. “I was just walking around outside and I looked over, and there was ice cream. It rocked,” said junior Mike Brown in reference to the ice cream social that was sponsored by the Alumni. Later that night, the spoken word artist, Shihan, performed at the Cisler Center. Thursday featured a consultant from the hit T.V. show CSI, Dr. Gary Telgenhoff at the Arts Center. Friday featured the Soo Locks Boat Tour for the people who have never had the opportunity to tour the landmarks. Saturday featured the Oozeball tournament. The Brady Hall R.A., Rob Birbeck and his team, were the winners at the tournament. What a lot of people saw as the highlight of the week happened on Sunday night. The nationally known comedian, Steve Hoffstetter, came to campus to entertain the LSSU students. Also, as a bonus, the first 75 students received his book, “Student Body Shots”. The crowd reacted well to the comedian. Freshman Ian Bergman said, “He was hilarious. I loved the way he improvised some of his act.” To finish off the week C. L. Lindsay talked to the students about the rights of Facebook and MySpace users. It was a fun week, filled with a lot of activities to start off what looks to be an exciting year for everyone.
