This year, the Arts Center at LSSU continues its effort to expand into new areas of artistic and theatrical expression.  Deborah Choszcyk, a new face at LSSU, is supervising a dance company that she hopes will be involved in numerous performances both on and off campus.  There are no restrictions about who is allowed to join the dance company, everyone – of any age, shape, or size – is welcome to attend and receive instruction. Performances will include the full-time company and students with regular class schedules.  Additionally, the company does not restrict itself simply to performance rehearsal, it is meant to provide an education in the fundamentals and techniques of dance, and to explore a diverse number of dance styles, from ballet to modern to tap to ethnic.  Choszczyk does not see dance simply as a form of physical expertise that should only be practiced by professionals, she views it as a means of emotional expression to be enjoyed by everyone, as personally fulfilling as any of the arts. She speaks almost breathlessly about what she has so far seen from the dance company, in only the first week of the semester: “I have seen such wonderful things in a dance studio already this semester – many moving things.  One student was moved almost to tears.”

She is extremely ambitious and enthusiastic about the prospects of the dance company, and hopes that it will be accredited and be officially offered as a course, but if it is not, she won’t allow that to dishearten her.  She does not see herself as the only one at LSSU who is committed to dance, as she has the utmost faith in the students’ desire to see the program succeed and expand: “They have passion... they want to see it grow.”  Already, the company is scheduled to perform at LSSU’s cultural festival in October and at the MAHPERD (Michigan Association for Health, Physical Education, Recreation and Dance) convention in Traverse City, and Choszcyk plans for the dance company to put on performances in the Arts Center, one at the end of each semester, and aid Theater performers with any dance choreography that may be needed.  She is disappointed that there is so little awareness of the dance company’s existence; with recognition and awareness, she feels that dance can evolve into one of the most popular on-campus activities.

Dr. Gary Balfantz, Theater Director at LSSU, is equally optimistic about the program, and is delighted to see Arts at LSSU expanding into new areas: “It’s a wonderful addition to the arts program, and it’s poised to grow with other arts at the university,” he says, grinning at Ms. Choszcyk. “And I would like to welcome the very talented and congenial lady.” He is in agreement with Choszcyk that there are remarkable things going on in the Arts Center, and with recognition from students and the community, the LSSU Arts program will be seen as worthwhile and diverse.  Reiterating her determination and dedication to the dance company’s success, Choszcyk assures that “If I can bring movement to this campus, I’ll do it in whatever way possible.”
