On October 4, A. Van Jordan plans to visit the Sault area, to reveal to our community a pure and completely revolutionary mind frame in the form of poetry. The renowned poet plans to not only speak with students about poetry, but also will read some of his poetry publicly at 7:00pm at the Bayliss Public Library on that, very anticipated, Thursday.

This event is  sponsored by the Bayliss Public Library, the English and Communication Club and the Department of English and communication here on our very own campus. Jordan has taught at Prince George’s Community College in Largo, Maryland, and he has served two years with AmeriCorp’s WritersCorps, where he taught community-based writing workshops in Washington, D.C., he was awarded a D.C. Commission on the Arts and Humanities Literary Fellowship in 1995.

Van Jordan has published a book titled Rise, which was published by Tia Chucha Press in 2001. The book Rise won the PEN/Oakland Josephine Miles award, and was chosen for the Book of the Month Club by the Academy of American Poets. Published in 2004 by W.W. Norton & Co. was his second book, titled, M-A-N-C-O-L-I-A which was listed as one of the “Best Books of 2005” by The London Times, and was also awarded an Anisfield-Wolf Award. In 2005 Jordan was awarded a Whiting Writers Award, and in 2006 a 30th edition Pushcart Prize. Just July this year, Jordan’s book titled Quantum Lyrics, was published by W.W. Norton & Co., he also received a John Simon Guggenheim Fellowship this year.

Living in Austin, Texas, A. Van Jordan is a graduate of the Cave Canem Workshop, and  currently teaches at the University of Texas. He is also a faculty member in the MFA Program for Writers at Warren Wilson College, and is also one of the founding members of the Poison Clan Collective.
