Bourne Is Back PDF Print E-mail

This summer saw the return of Jason Bourne, one of the most famous special operatives in all of film and fiction.   Bourne is unique in that he does not know who he is, at least not in his entirety as he suffers from amnesia.

If you have been following the trilogy, you would know that the first movie, The Bourne Identity, begins with a man floating in the sea, unknown to the entire world. Slowly he claws his way back to civilization seeking the truth of who and what he is.  This knowledge, becomes his sole reason for living until he learns the truth, that he is an assassin, without a true identity, a chameleon, able to change his appearance almost at will. Through a series of events he decides he no longer wants his former life and indeed anything would be better.

The secret portion of the CIA which runs Treadstone, Bourne’s operations, is meanwhile going nearly insane trying to find him in order to see what went wrong in his final operation. Furthermore they don’t know if he is dead, alive or rogue, and are in a mad scramble to try to find him and at the least neutralize the threat that he poses. Bourne goes on the run with a girl he meets in the embassy, trying to escape people he does not know for reasons he does not understand. By the end of the first movie Jason has managed to evade those trying to capture or kill him, and, with Marie, manages to escape.

In the second movie, The Bourne Supremacy, Jason is nearly killed by agents trying to use his identity to further their own ends, and he his forced out of hiding once again in order to come to the bottom of what is happening. Treadstone, which had been disbanded since Bourne went into hiding, has surfaced again with more operatives and an unknown agenda.   Jason is forced back into the role of assassin/ secret agent and continues on his quest for understanding of who he is and what ever dark secrets his past holds.

The third and final installment of the trilogy, the Bourne Ultimatum, picks up exactly where the second movie ends; Bourne is wounded and trapped, in Russia, in winter.  The CIA is in the process of doing all that they possibly can to find him. This final movie leads Jason through even more crashes and fights with enemy agents, revealing more about himself and his dark past as he finally comes to the realization of what made him who he is with all of his uncertainty, remorse and dreams.

I am not going to tell you how the story ends, if it even ends at all. It is not your typical, good guy gets the girl then rides off into the sunset; instead it ends in typical Bourne style, with just enough closure and a twist keeping its audience wondering what has happened. I guarantee however you will not be bored. The DVD is coming out on December 11th and I for one will be in line eagerly waiting for it.
