On Friday, September 28th, students affiliated with His House, one of several student Christian Fellowships at LSSU, spent their day on the lawn outside Brady Hall reading the Bible aloud. Organized by “the driving force” in member Amy Naghtin, and overseen by Campus Minister Scott Crary, a handful of faithful students, including Darryl Meyette, Becky Wilson, Gail Dyer, Brittany Stutzman, and Jamie Becker, took turns reading from the New Testament. To generalize, and probably far too much, the New Testament tells the story of Jesus Christ, telling of His life, His work, and His ministry. The His House students began their reading at nine in the morning and by five in the afternoon, had made it most of the way through Acts.
Minister Scott Crary says the response they’d gotten from the students was “decent”, with opposition coming mostly in the form of funny looks. Still, he says, “I think we’re doing what God wants us to do, in some small part, [by] reading His word.” It would seem that the faithful had a measure of agreement on the other side of the equation on that point. The weather was sunny and crisp, exactly the kind of autumn day the Upper Peninsula is famous for. One couldn’t help but think, looking around at the just-changing trees and feeling the gentle fall warmth of the sun, that maybe there really is something greater to be found in the words being read aloud in that small circle of students. However beautiful day, the readers had would not have been there if they’d had things their way. The event was originally meant to take place during spring semester last school year, but there just wasn’t enough time to organize the whole thing before the end of classes. As it was, though, His House couldn’t have picked a nicer day for it. Even little Jack, the minister’s almost-two year old son, appeared to be enjoying himself immensely, pointing out every crack in the nearby sidewalk with the kind of enthusiasm one would expect from someone two feet tall. His House Christian Fellowship wishes very much to reach out to the student body, and welcomes anyone who wants to join them for their weekly meeting. The weekly fellowship meeting is held on Thursday nights at 7:00 pm in the Shouldice Library building, room 278.
