The weekend of September 21 on Mackinaw Island there was more going on than just horses, tourists, and fudge on the island. The Grand Hotel hosted the 27th biannual Republican leadership conference. The theme for this year is “relying on our roots” and it allows Michigan grassroots activists, party leaders, legislators, and statewide elected officials to be able to gather and discuss important issues. September 21 starting at noon with registration that went until 10 pm, every guest that attended rode the Sheplers ferry to and from the island for the event. Senator Jason Allan hosted the welcome reception on the east front porch at 3:30 pm. After that there were two conference workshops, then dinner featuring special guests Cong Duncan Hunter and Mayor Rudy Giuliani. Friday was truly the laid back day on the schedule. On September 22 the day started at 7:30 am with a congressional Q&A. Sam Brownback along with a few others made an appearance at breakfast. Following breakfast, there was a morning session with speaker Newt Gingrich and a book signing to follow. Conferences started with topics on “Perspectives on Tax Policy” and “Web Activism: Blogging and the New Media”. Lunch was served and Governor Mike Huckabee and Governor Mitt Romney attended as special guests. The State committee meeting began after lunch finished and a variety of conference workshops started. “Perspectives on Tax Policy” another seminar presented by Citizens for Traditional Values with the subject of “Can the Reagan Coalition be Preserved?”, Presented by GOPAC was a seminar on “enlisting a New Generation of Republicans to Lead America”. Finally the “Afternoon Session with Ward Connerly” was held. The majority was wrapped up on Saturday but there was a church service provided on Sunday morning. Add as favourites (0)
